What Does “Lymph” Mean in Blood Test

Ly or Lym defines lymphocytes.

Lymphocytes are another type of white blood cells in the blood. White blood cells help protect the body from diseases and fight infections.

Lymphocytes are the source of serum Immunoglobulins and cellular immune responses.

All Lymphocytes are produced in the Bone Marrow. B-cell Lymphocytes also mature in the bone marrow, while T-cell Lymphocytes mature in the Timus gland.

B cells produce antibodies specific to a disturbing antigen.

The majority of lymphocytes circulating in the blood are T-Lymphocytes rather than B-Lymphocytes.

In Complete blood count (CBC) testing, the sum of T and B-Lymphocytes is reported together.

In adults, lymphocytes after neutrophils are the second most common wbc type. In children under the age of 8, Lymphocytes are more common than neutrophils.
